NEW DELHI – Bajaj Auto Ltd.'s two-wheeler wholesale sales rose 5% on year in August, the strongest growth in three months, according to the company's exchange filing Monday. Sales of two-wheelers grew for the first time in the past three months, driven entirely by exports, as domestic despatches declined for the third consecutive month.

 

Bajaj Auto sold 341,887 two-wheelers to dealers in August, up 2% on year. Of this, sales to dealers in India fell nearly 12% on year to 184,109 units. Sales to dealers overseas grew 25% on year to 157,778 units. This is the highest number of two-wheelers the company had sold abroad since November, when its sales reached 164,465 units. Exports accounted for 46% of total two-wheeler sales in August, up from 38% a year ago, but down from 53% in July and 50% in May.

 

Overall, Bajaj Auto sold 417,616 automobile units to dealerships in August, up nearly 5% on year. Domestic sales fell over 8% to 232,398 units while exports grew 29% to 185,218 units. Commercial vehicle sales, which form over 18% of Bajaj Auto's overall sales, grew 21% on year to 75,729 units in August. Sales of its three-wheeler units in India grew 7% on year to 48,289 units while exports surged 58% to 27,440 units. 

 

From April to August, the company's overall sales grew 2% on year to 1.89 million units. Of this, sales in India fell 9% to 1.05 million units even as exports grew 21% to 844,504 units. Two-wheeler sales so far this financial year have remained largely unchanged at 1.59 million units while commercial vehicle sales have grown 14% to 307,928 units.  

 

For the quarter ended Jun. 30, Bajaj Auto reported a net profit of INR 20.96 billion on revenue of INR 125.84 billion. At 1010 IST, shares of Bajaj Auto were 1.2% higher at INR 8,734 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
