Govt raises Sept sugar sales quota for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh

MUMBAI – The government has raised sugar sales quota for September for Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, according to a notification by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. The all-India sales quota for September has been set at 2.35 million tonnes, up over 4% from 2.25 million tonnes in August, but unchanged from a year-ago.
Maharashtra's sales quota has been raised by nearly 7% on month to 710,537 tonnes in September and the quota for Karnataka has been increased by 7% to 281,646 tonnes. The sales quota for Uttar Pradesh has been increased by over 4% to 950,393 tonnes.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
Under the new modalities for action against sugar mills violating monthly quota as applicable from Apr. 1, those mills that sold more in June, the excess quantity has been deducted from the release quota for September, the release said. Those mills that under-utilised the June quota have been exempted due to the current domestic demand scenario, the release added.
