MUMBAI – Indian telecom operators net added 485,017 mobile users in July, lower than the 2 million users added in June, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Friday. During the month, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharti Airtel Ltd. were the only companies to increase the subscriber base, while Vodafone Idea Ltd., Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. lost subscribers.
The net new additions were led by Reliance Jio Infocomm, which added 482,954 users in July. However, this was significantly lower than the 1.91 million users added in June. Bharti Airtel added 464,437 users in July, also lower than the 763,482 users added in June.
While BSNL and MTNL narrowed their subscriber losses in July compared to June, debt-ridden telecom major Vodafone Idea's subscriber loss widened further to 359,199 from 217,816 lost in June. BSNL lost 100,707 users in July, down from 305,766 users lost in June and MTNL lost 2,472 users, significantly lower than the 152,657 users lost in June.
At the end of July, the total mobile subscribers in India stood at 1.16 billion. As of Jul. 31, private sector service providers Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea collectively held 92.2% market share of mobile users while state-owned BSNL and MTNL held only 7.8%, the data showed. The market shares of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea were 41.0%, 33.7%, and 17.5%, respectively, as on Jul. 31.
During July, a total of 15.41 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability, higher than the 13.58 million in June. The number of active wireless mobile subscribers in July 2025 was 1.083 billion, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
