MUMBAI – The International Sugar Organization has forecast the global sugar deficit at 231,000 million tonnes in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), significantly lower than 4.8 million tonnes last year. "A global deficit of this magnitude, ahead of the start of the season, can be considered as negligible," the organisation said.

This is the International Sugar Organization's first estimate for 2025-26. The deficit is the difference between the estimated global consumption and production. The global sugar production in 2025-26 is projected at 180.6 million tonnes, a 3% increase from the previous year, primarily due to higher output in India, Thailand, and Pakistan. Global sugar consumption is expected to rise 0.4% to 180.8 million tonnes during the year, it said.

The organisation expects the global sugar trade to be steady, with exports projected at 63.9 million tonnes in 2025-26. The trade flow outlook for 2025-26 is neutral, as import demand is estimated at 63.76 million tonnes, resulting in a negligible surplus, it said.

The organisation's outlook for sugar prices remains neutral to bullish for the next three months, as the deficit in the last season and its impact on global stocks are confirmed. "The fundamental outlook for the 2025/26 season is neutral for prices, with news around the tail of southern hemisphere crops and lower beet production expected to be reported before possible increases in Indian, Thai and Pakistan production," it said.

The ending stock for 2025-26 is projected at 92.1 million tonnes, down from 92.4 million tonnes at the end of 2024-25. The stocks-consumption ratio is also seen lower at 50.95% in 2025-26 compared to 51.37% in the previous season.

ETHANOL

Global ethanol production is expected to reach 120.6 billion litres in 2025, up nearly 2% from 118.6 billion litres in 2024. Global ethanol consumption is projected to grow around 3% to 120.5 billion litres in 2025. "This expansion continues despite economic headwinds and trade tensions, underscoring the structural strength of renewable fuel mandates worldwide," the organisation said. "India emerges as the standout growth market, with production projections revised upward to 9.5 bln (billion) litres as the country advances toward its 20% blending target, marking a shift toward grain-based feedstocks that now account for over 60% of production."  End
