MUMBAI – A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation currently lies over northern Pakistan and adjoining Punjab, which is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India--in particular, Uttarakhand and eastern Rajashan--till Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under the influence of this weather system, heavy rainfall is expected to continue over most parts of northwest India till Tuesday, the department said.
The presence of a shear zone is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall with a few spells of extremely heavy showers over Telangana and coastal Karnataka Thursday, the department further said and issued a red alert. The intensity of showers is expected to peter out, with heavy rainfall likely over Telangana in the next two days and over coastal Karnataka in the next six days, the department said.
A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. A shear zone is an atmospheric region where winds blow from opposing directions, creating a zone of intense activity and heavy rainfall.
The department has warned of a moderate risk of flash floods in the next 24 hours in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Telangana, which include the Adilabad, Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, and Vikarabad districts.
Very heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala Thursday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is seen over several parts of south peninsular India till Wednesday, it added.
Under the influence of the shear zone, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada Thursday, and over the ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Friday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is seen over parts of the Gujarat region, Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra in the next seven days. Light to moderate rainfall is expected over the rest of west India in the next seven days, the department said.
The weather bureau has warned of a moderate risk of flash floods for the next 24 hours in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Vidarbha, which include the Chandrapur, Wardha, and Yavatmal districts. End
