MUMBAI – Domestic airlines carried 12.61 million passengers in July, registering a decline of around 3% year on year, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Wednesday showed. Till July this year, domestic airlines flew 97.78 million passengers, up around 6% on year.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo airline retained its top spot in the domestic market with a market share of 65.2%, up from 64.5% in the previous month. The low-cost airline carried 8.22 million passengers in July, down over 6% from the previous month. Its passenger load factor was 84.1% in July, up from 85.4% in June.
The Air India group, on other hand, saw a decrease in its market share to 26.2% in July from 27.1% in June. The Tata group-owned carrier flew 3.31 million passengers in July, lower than the 3.69 million carried in June. Air India group, which includes Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express, also saw a decrease in its passenger load factor to 78.6% in July, from 81.5% in June.
Akasa Air's market share increased to 5.5% in July from 5.3% in June. However, the ultra-low-cost airline flew only 698,000 passengers in July, lower than the 722,000 passengers carried in June. Its passenger load factor declined slightly to 90.2% in July from 91.4% in June. The Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd. saw a slight improvement in its market share to 2% in July from 1.9% in June. It flew 246,000 passengers in July, lower than 261,000 in June. Its passenger load factor was 84.2%, down from 85.2% in June.
The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for July was 0.81%, the report said. In July, the cancellation rate was 4.21% for SpiceJet, 0.49% for Air India group, 0.28% for IndiGo, and 0.10% for Akasa Air. The top three reasons for flight cancellations in July were weather-related concern, technical issues, and operational matters, according to the report.
During July, a total of 1,257 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines and the number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month was around one, the report said. During the month, IndiGo continued to register the best on-time performance at 91.4%, followed by Akasa Air at 85.3%, Air India group at 82.6%, and SpiceJet at 62.7%. DGCA calculates on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines at six metro airports--Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
At 1242 IST, shares of InterGlobe Aviation were down 4.8% on the National Stock Exchange at INR 5,759, and those of SpiceJet were down 2.7% at INR 35.58 on BSE. End
