India receives 37% above normal rains in week to Wed, highest since mid-June

MUMBAI – India recorded 37?ove normal rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, the highest since mid-June, according to the India Meteorological Department. This marks the second consecutive week of above normal rainfall across the country after a period of low monsoon conditions in the first half of August.
In the week ended Wednesday, the country recorded an average rainfall of 71.6 millimetres, 37?ove the normal of 52.3 millimetres for the week, data from the weather department showed. Average rainfall for the country improved due to excessive rainfall in northwest and central India during the week.
Northwest India recorded 95.7 millimetres of rainfall, 142?ove the normal of 39.5 millimetres, according to the data. Rainfall in central India was 35?ove normal at 79.8 millimetres. On the other hand, rainfall in south peninsular India was 46?low normal at 22.0 millimetres, while in east and northeast India it was 10?low normal at 69.2 millimetres.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in 10, of which six were from northwest India. Six sub-divisions recorded "excess" rains, five recorded "normal" showers, 10 received "deficient" and five su-bdivisions received "large deficient" rainfall during the week. From Jun. 1-Aug. 27, the country has received 704.5 millimetres of rain, 5?ove the normal of 672.1 millimetres, as per the data.
