Cabinet approves 4 railway projects with total cost of INR 123 bln

NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved four railway projects with a total cost of INR 123.28 billion, the government said on Wednesday. Of the four projects approved, one is a new railway line that will connect far-flung areas of Kutch in Gujarat and is expected to be completed in three years.
The proposed new line in the Kutch region will add 145 route kilometres and 164 track kilometres to the existing railway network in Gujarat with an estimated cost of INR 25.26 billion. "Besides promoting the tourism in the state of Gujarat, the new rail line will help in transportation of salt, cement, coal, clinker & bentonite," the government said in a release.
The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the multi-tracking of three railway projects benefitting Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, and Assam. The government will add the third and fourth line Secunderabad (Sanathnagar) – Wadi route, spanning across Karnataka & Telangana. The 173-km long third and fourth line is expected to be completed in five years at a cost of INR 50.12 billion.
"These initiatives will provide connectivity & improve travel convenience besides reducing logistic cost and decrease dependence on oil imports," the government said in a release. "Additionally, the projects will contribute to lower CO2 emissions, thereby supporting sustainable and efficient rail operations. These projects will also generate direct employment for about 25.1 million human-days during its construction," the government said. End
