MUMBAI – The Centre Tuesday cut stock limits on the quantity of wheat that trade entities can stock till Mar. 31, 2026, according to a consumer affairs ministry release. The government revised the holding limits to "prevent artificial scarcity", it added. "In order to manage the overall food security and to prevent hoarding and unscrupulous speculation, the Government of India imposed stock limits...," it read. It had first reimposed stock limits on trade entities holding wheat for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) on May 28.
As per the release, a wheat trader or wholesaler cannot stock more than 2,000 tonnes, down from 3,000 tonnes earlier. Retailers can now stock only 8 tonnes in each of their outlets compared to 10 tonnes earlier. For big chain retailers, the stock limit is again 8 tonnes for each retail outlet and depot, and stock of 8 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets, the release said. Earlier it was 10 tonnes for each retail outlet and depot, and stock of 10 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets.
For processors, the government said 60% of monthly installed capacity multiplied by the remaining months of FY26 can be held from now till Mar. 31. It has cut the limit from 70% of monthly installed capacity earlier.
Officials of central and state governments will closely monitor enforcement of these stock limits to ensure that no artificial scarcity of wheat is created in the country. If the stocks held by wheat traders, wholsalers, or retailers are above the prescribed limits, they will have to bring it to the prescribed stock limits within 15 days of the issue of the notification. They have to declare the position of the stocks on the portal of Department of Food and Public Distribution.
According to the government, India's wheat production in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) was 117.5 million tonnes, up from 113.3 million in the previous year. The government has procured 30.04 million tonnes in FY26. End
