MUMBAI – Unity Small Finance Bank is planning an initial public offering in 2027, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Inderjit Camotra said Monday. However, it is no hurry to transition to a universal bank like many of its peers.

"Being a small finance bank, we have access to domain and space where the yields are higher," Camotra said on the sidelines of the FIBAC 2025 event conducted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry and the Indian Banks' Association Monday. "Why should we sacrifice that?"

A public listing is one of the prerequisites for the licence. AU Small Finance Bank received an in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India to become a universal bank earlier this month, the first to do so after the regulator laid out guidelines for such a voluntary transition in April 2024. Others, including Utkarsh Small Finance Bank and Jana Small Finance Bank, have applied for a universal bank licence.

The CEO highlighted how the small finance bank had successfully used data from comparable economies, including Indonesia and Brazil in its lending models, when granular data in India is not available. Unity prefers to remain positioned between larger players and non-banking financial companies.

"We don't consider NBFCs as competition for ourselves," Camotra said. "We're not starved for funding, which NBFCs are."  End
