MUMBAI – India received 10.6 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 49% above the normal of 7.1 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. Since Jun. 1, the country has recorded 4% above normal rainfall at 684.7 millimetres.
Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, two received above-normal showers while the other two recorded below-normal rainfall, according to data from the weather department.
Northwest India recorded a whopping 289% above normal rainfall at 21.8 millimetres, the data showed. Of the nine subdivisions in the region, seven recorded "large excess" rainfall and two received "excess" rainfall on Monday. Multiple subdivisions witnessed a steep climb in the amount of rainfall, with Punjab recording a whopping 1,272% above-normal showers at 48 millimetres and west Rajasthan receiving 1,154% above-normal rainfall at 27.6 millimetres, the data showed. The presence of multiple weather systems, including an upper air cyclonic circulation and a western disturbance presenting as a trough, is causing incessant rainfall over the region, the weather department said.
