MUMBAI - Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of northwest India till Tuesday, with a red alert issued for Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab for Monday and for Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said.

An upper cyclonic circulation currently lies over south Haryana and the adjoining northeast Rajasthan while a western disturbance lies over most of northwest India, the weather department said. A trough runs from the above-mentioned circulation, joining another cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, the department said. The spell of incessant rainfall over most parts of northwest India is expected to continue till Tuesday, after which the intensity is likely to reduce. Thereafter, only a few spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall are seen over some parts of the region till Saturday, the department said.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha-West Bengal coast. This weather system, along with the trough, is likely to cause a spell of heavy rainfall over several parts of east and central India till Sunday, the weather agency said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday, the bureau said.

Under the influence of the circulation over the Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area is expected to form over the same region in the next 48 hours, which is also likely to cause heavy showers over parts of east and central India, as per the weather bureau.

In west India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Gujarat till Saturday, the weather department said. The state is likely to witness more spells of very heavy rainfall till Wednesday while heavy rains are expected to persist till Saturday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra in the next seven days. The rest of west India is expected to receive light to moderate showers in the next seven days, the department said.
