NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump has named Sergio Gor, who he called a "great friend", as the next US ambassador to India. Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, whose tenure as the 26th US ambassador to India ended in January, at a time when relations between the two countries have worsened over the Washington imposing large tariffs on New Delhi.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, "As Director of Presidential Personnel, Sergio and his team have hired nearly 4,000 America First Patriots across every Department of our Federal Government in RECORD time — Our Departments and Agencies are over 95% filled! Sergio will remain in his current role at the White House until his confirmation."
"Sergio is a great friend, who has been at my side for many years," Trump said. "For the most populous Region in the World, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador. Congratulations Sergio!"
The US has imposed 25% tariff on India, which will rise to 50% from Wednesday. It had levied an additional 25% tariff on India as a punishment for its procurement of crude oil from Russia. While the two nations have been working on a bilateral trade agreement since February, negotiations have broken down recently, with the next round of talks, which were expected to begin Monday, postponed indefinitely.
The two sides have likely reached a stalemate due to disagreements over access to India's agricultural sector. The US wants access to India's politically and socially sensitive farm sector under the trade pact. The US also wants to push genetically modified crops and dairy products into India. New Delhi is unwilling to yield to these demands.
Since Trump announced the 50% tariff on India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly said India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers. In his Independence Day speech, Modi said his government will never accept any agreement that may harm India's farm, dairy or fisheries sectors. End
