MUMBAI – Telecom stocks are likely to keep consolidating next week as the sector still awaits fresh cues after the end of the June quarter earnings. Stocks in the sector are likely to track the overall market next week, too, analysts said.
The delay in Vodafone Idea's debt funding continues to cloud the visibility of the telecom company's survival, brokerage Nuvama Institutional Equities said in a report on Monday. The transition of Abhijit Kishore into his new role as chief executive officer, along with meeting adjusted gross revenues and spectrum obligations, remains a key factor to be monitored, the broking firm said in its report after the company's post-earnings call with analysts on Monday. While parameters such as pace of subscriber loss and average revenue per user, or ARPU, also need to improve, balance sheet repair has become highly crucial for the company's survival, the broking firm said.
In the June quarter, Vodafone Idea had reported a sequentially lower net loss at INR 66.08 billion.
Vodafone Idea stock ended nearly 8% higher at INR 7.07 on the National Stock Exchange on Friday, on hopes of relief on debt from the central government. Media reports said the Prime Minister's Office is likely to take a call on a relief proposal for the company. In the dying moments of the session Friday, Mint reported that the central government may slash the adjusted gross revenue dues for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. If approved, Vodafone's AGR dues are likely to be reduced to INR 280 billion from INR 834 billion and Bharti Airtel's dues will likely be reduced to INR 100 billion from INR 420 billion, the report said.
"Recent pullback rally in BSE Telecom space from the price support of 2770 is likely to continue up to 2960 levels, support on the downside is placed around 2830 levels," Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president and senior derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market, said. Friday, the BSE Telecommunication index ended 0.7% higher at 2893.47.
Bharti Airtel's shares are likely to move in a thin range of INR 1,900-1,980 in the coming week, options data showed. The stock rose over 3% this week, closing slightly higher on Friday at INR 1,933.30.
