MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of northwest India till Tuesday due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Uttar Pradesh. The weather system is seen tilting southwestwards, causing extremely heavy rainfall over east Rajasthan till Saturday.
A red alert has been issued by the weather bureau in east Rajasthan till Saturday and an orange alert in west Rajasthan till Monday due to extremely heavy showers and very heavy rains over these regions. A red alert, the highest level of weather warning, indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours is expected.
There is another upper air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal which is tilting southwestwards, the weather bureau said. This is causing extremely heavy rainfall over Jharkhand and Odisha Friday. A few parts of east and central India such as west Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and parts of Bihar are likely to receive very heavy showers till Saturday.
The weather department also said there is moderate to high risk of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh till Saturday. It said there is low to moderate risk of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Odisha and Jharkhand till Saturday. Surface runoff and inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, it said.
A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and off the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal around Monday, the weather department said. Under its influence, a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over east India and the adjoining areas from Saturday. End
