MUMBAI – A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining areas of north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal around Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under its influence, a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over east India and the adjoining areas from Saturday, the weather department said.

Currently, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining areas of north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, while another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Madhya Pradesh, the weather bureau said. These weather systems are expected to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of central India and its neighbouring areas for the next seven days, the bureau said.

The weather department has warned of a low-to-moderate risk of flash floods for the next 24 hours over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Odisha, which include Baragarh, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Jajapur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, and Sundargarh districts. Similar warnings have also been issued for the East Mednipur, North 24 Parganas, Purulia, and South 24 Parganas districts in Gangetic West Bengal, and for the Garhwa, Gumla, Khunti, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ranchi, Saraikela, Simdega, and West Singhbhum districts in Jharkhand.

An upper air cyclonic circulation over Kutch, while an off-trough runs along the Gujarat and Maharashtra coasts. Under their influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over north Gujarat till Sunday, the weather department said. The formation of the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cause a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gujarat from Monday, the department said.

In northwest India, the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase from Friday, the weather department said. Very heavy rainfall is likely over some parts till Tuesday, while heavy rainfall is seen over most parts of the region in the next six-seven days, the weather bureau said.

The weather department also sees a low-to-moderate risk of flash floods for the next 24 hours over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Uttarakhand, which include the Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garwal, and Uttarkashi districts.  End
