NEW DELHI – The government has extended the last date for filing goods and services tax returns for the month of July for businesses in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar to Aug. 27, the finance ministry said in a notification. The last date for filing GST returns for July for businesses elsewhere in India is Aug. 20.

The extension comes after disruption in Mumbai and nearby districts due to extremely heavy rainfall. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corp, in view of the heavy downpour, had declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, government, and semi-government offices Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for Mumbai and its suburbs including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Satara, till Wednesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. The department has issued a yellow alert for Thursday.  End
