India receives 22% above normal rains in wk to Wed, highest since early Jul

MUMBAI – India received 22% above-normal rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, the highest since early July, according to the India Meteorological Department. The rainfall over the country was sharply below normal in the previous two weeks.
During the week ended Wednesday, the country received an average rainfall of 70.8 millimetres, 22% above the normal of 57.9 millimetres for the week, according to the India Meteorological Department. Average rainfall for the country improved as central India and south India received excess rainfall during the week.
Rainfall was 95% above normal in southern peninsular India at 82.0 millimetres and 54% above normal in central India at 103.1 millimetres during the week, data from the weather bureau showed. However, the rainfall was 13% below normal in northwest India at 41.2 millimetres and 43% below normal in east and northeast India at 45.7 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in 12, of which six were from the southern Peninsula and five from central India. Five subdivisions recorded "excess" rains, six recorded "normal" showers, nine received "deficient" and four subdivisions received "large deficient" rainfall during the week. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 632.7 millimetres of rain, 2% above the normal of 619.8 millimetres, as per the data.
