MUMBAI – After extremely heavy showers over Maharashtra for the past four days, the India Meteorological Department expects the intensity of rainfall to reduce over parts of the state from Wednesday. However, a few parts of the state, including Mumbai, are likely to see rainfall over 210 millimetres Wednesday, it said.
The weather agency has maintained its red alert for Mumbai and a few other districts of the state. A red alert has been issued for Palghar, Thane, Raigad, the Ghats of Nashik, Pune, and Satara for Wednesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The depression over northwest Bay of Bengal weakened into a well-marked low pressure area on Tuesday and further weakened into a low pressure area Wednesday. However, the associated cyclonic circulation currently lies over southeast Madhya Pradesh. There is an offshore trough along the Gujarat-Maharashtra coasts, the weather bureau said.
Under the influence of the offshore trough, extremely to exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Gujarat till Thursday. The weather bureau has issued a red alert in Gujarat for Wednesday and the alert continues for Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday. Saurashtra and Kutch are likely to receive more than 300 millimetres of rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather department's agromet division has asked farmers in Gujarat to provide mechanical support to horticultural crops. It has also said to drain excess water from fields of the current kharif crops. The weather bureau has issued moderate to high risk of flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Gujarat. Surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, it said.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east and central India till Aug. 26 due to the cyclonic circulation over southeast Madhya Pradesh. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of the region during the week. End
