NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity.

"Since my meeting with President Xi (Jinping) in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other's interests and sensitivities," Modi said in a post on social media platform X, after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. "I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) Summit."

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit will be held in Tianjin on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had refused to sign the joint statement issued at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Defence Ministers' meeting in June as the statement did not mention the Apr. 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 26 people were killed.

Modi will visit China for the first time in seven years this month as India and China look to boost ties amidst the tariffs imposed by US. India faces the highest tariff from the US for any country at 50% and China faces 30% duty right now. Ties between New Delhi and Beijing soured after the Galwan Valley conflict in 2020.

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday met Yi and said he was confident that the discussions would contribute to a stable, cooperative, and forward-looking relationship between India and China. "As we seek to move ahead from a difficult period in our ties, it needs a candid and constructive approach from both sides," Jaishankar said.  End
