India rainfall Tuesday 51% above normal at 11.9 mm, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 11.9 millimetres of rainfall Tuesday, 51% above the normal of 7.9 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. So far in the southwest monsoon season, the country has recorded 2% above normal rainfall at 623.1 millimetres.

 

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, two received above-normal showers and two recorded below-normal rainfall. Most parts of southern and central India recorded "excess" to "large excess" showers Tuesday as the well-marked low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression.

 

The southern peninsula recorded a whopping 123% above normal rain at 12.2 millimetres, data from the weather department showed. Central India Tuesday received 20.4 millimetres of rainfall, 113% above normal. Rainfall in northwest India was 15% below normal at 5.4 millimetres while that in eastern and northeast India was 41% below normal at 6.1 millimetres, the data showed.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall Tuesday was "large excess" in 12, of which six were in southern India and five in central India. Rainfall was "excess" in four subdivisions, "normal" in six, "deficient" in eight, and "large deficient" in five subdivisions. One sub-division recorded no rain.  End
