NEW DELHI – The Securities and Exchange Board of India is considering a review of intraday position limits in index options, Moneycontrol reported Tuesday quoting "people familiar with the development who requested not to be named". According to the news report, SEBI is considering increasing the threshold for intraday position monitoring by stock exchanges to INR 50 billion while keeping the INR 100 billion gross ceiling intact.

At present there is no limit for intraday positions for index options, but exchanges monitor intraday positions at the same thresholds as end-of-day limits of INR 15 billion on a net delta, or futures equivalent, basis and INR 100 billion on a gross basis, according to the news report.

As per the report, SEBI examined recent expiry-day data in Nifty and Sensex derivatives contracts and found that positions routinely breached the end-of-day limits during intraday trade. The review is under SEBI's consideration "with a focus on reining in excessive trading on expiry days", the news report said.  End
