MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department expects rainfall over northwest and adjoining east India to increase from Friday, with very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India from Friday till Monday. The weather bureau has also issued a red alert for parts of west India as it expects extremely heavy rainfall till Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the region till Friday.
A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. The weather bureau has issued a red alert for Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra till Wednesday. The red alert for Saurashtra and Kutch remains in place till Thursday, it said.
This is mainly due to a well-marked low pressure area which has intensified into a depression over northwest and adjoining Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts on Monday. The depression has moved west-northwestwards and is currently over south interior Odisha. The weather system is likely to weaken into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 12 hours, the weather agency said.
As the weather system moves west-northwestwards across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh, parts of east and central India are likely to receive very heavy showers till Monday. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Vidarbha on Tuesday.
The weather department expects heavy rainfall to continue over parts of northeast India this week. It said Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to see very heavy rainfall during the week. End
