India rainfall Monday 41% above normal at 10.8 mm, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 10.8 millimetres of rainfall Monday, 41% above the normal of 7.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. So far during the southwest monsoon, the country has recorded 1% above normal rainfall at 611.3 millimetres.
Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, two received above-normal showers and two recorded below-normal rainfall. With a well-marked low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal, most parts of southern, eastern, and central India received "large excess" rainfall Monday.
The southern peninsula recorded a whopping 233% above normal rain at 20 millimetres, data from the weather department showed. Leaving Lakshadweep, rest nine sub-divisions recorded "excess" to "large excess" rainfall Monday. Staggered rainfall for past three weeks over southern India has pushed the total rainfall over the region since Jun. 1 to 524.1 millimetres, 8% above-normal. In July, southern India received 2% below-normal rains at 200.4 millimetres, and in June it was 3% below normal showers at 156.7 millimetres.
Central India Monday received 14.2 millimetres of rainfall, 61% above normal. Rainfall in northwest India was 37% below normal at 3.7 millimetres while that in eastern and northeast India was 44% below normal at 6.2 millimetres, the data showed.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall Monday was "large excess" in 13, of which eight were in southern India. Rainfall was "excess" in six subdivisions, "normal" in two, "deficient" in nine, and "large deficient" in six subdivisions. End
