MUMBAI – Extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of west India till Wednesday under the influence of a well marked low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said Monday. The department has also issued a red alert in parts of western India till Wednesday.

A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. The weather bureau issued a red alert for Gujarat till Wednesday and parts of Maharashtra till Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to prevail over the region till Friday.

The low-pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts intensified into a well marked Low pressure area. The weather system is likely to move west–northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during the next 12 hours, the weather department said. The weather system is expected to cross south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around forenoon of Tuesday.

The weather bureau also said extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of southern India till Tuesday. It has issued a red alert in Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh for Monday and in parts of Karnataka till Tuesday. Red alert has been issued in Chhattisgarh and Odisha for Monday due to extremely heavy rainfall.

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of southern India till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of east and central India till Sunday.

The weather bureau issued a moderate risk of flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of north interior Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till 1130 IST Tuesday. Surface runoff and inundation is likely at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas.  End
