MUMBAI – India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement Saturday.

Media reports said there was no major positive outcome from the three-hour discussion between the two global leaders. Russia did not agree to a ceasefire, but Trump said his talks with Putin were "extremely productive". Putin said both the countries reached an "understanding" about the Ukraine conflict and warned Europe to not torpedo "the nascent progress."

Trump also said that Ukraine should agree to a deal to end the war with Russia and that the best way to end it was to go straight to a peace settlement and not through a ceasefire. In an interview with Fox News after his meeting with Putin, Trump also said they discussed about potential land swaps and security guarantees for Ukraine.

India's comments come amid increasing pressure from the US over its crude oil imports from Russia. Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington could increase secondary tariffs on India if the talks between Trump and Putin fail. "...If things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs (on India) could go up," Bessent had said in an interview to Bloomberg Wednesday. The US announced an additional 25% tariff on India for its crude oil purchases from Russia, on top of the existing 25% tariffs. The additional tariffs come into effect from Aug. 27.  End
