--Trade secy: Asked UK to fastrack FTA ratification
NEW DELHI – Amid global uncertainties and tariff announcements by the US, the Indian government has asked the UK to fastrack the ratification of the recently signed free trade agreement, Commerce Secretary Sunil Brathwal said Thursday.
After the US' tariff announcements for India, the government asked exporters to focus on diversifying the destination for their shipment, Barhtwal said. The ratification of the trade deal with the UK will help support the exporters in their strive for diversification, according to Barthwal.
The commerce ministry has also asked missions abroad to undertake proactive export promotion efforts in 50 countries, which account for more than 90% of India's exports, Barthwal said.
India and the UK signed the free trade agreement in July. Under the free trade agreement, India has committed to cut duty on 90% tariff lines while the UK would slash duty on 99% tariff lines.
Nearly 100% of India's exports to the UK will get a duty-free market access under trade deal. Both sides had a bilateral trade of $23.15 billion in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). India exported goods worth $14.55 billion in 2024-25 and imported $8.61 billion worth of goods in the year, according to data available with the commerce ministry. The UK is among India's top 10 export destinations.
