MUMBAI – India's headline indices closed marginally higher on Thursday after a choppy session, with a fall in shares of oil and gas companies being offset by gains in those of financial services companies. Thursday also marked the end of the June quarter earnings season, with most of the top 500 listed companies having already declared their financial results. Nearly an hour before market close, S&P Global Ratings upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', becoming the first major ratings agency to do so in a long time.
The Nifty 50 closed at 24631.30 points, up 11.95 points or 0.1%. The index closed higher for the second straight session, led by gains in heavyweights such as ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. The BSE Sensex closed 0.1% higher at 80597.66 points. Broader market indices closed in the red, unable to recover from intraday losses. The Nifty Midcap 50 index closed 0.4% lower. The Nifty Smallcap 250 and the Nifty Midcap 150 closed 0.2-0.4% down.
S&P Global Thursday upgraded India's credit rating for the first time since January 2007 citing the country's sound fundamentals for growth in the coming years. It also said the effect of US tariffs on India will be negligible, which echoes the market experts earlier views. Analysts have been saying that Indian economy will likely be resilient on external shocks, and even there is an impact due to tariff, the view is that it would be less than 1% hit on gross domestic product.
"It is definitely a positive for overall capital markets, but it will impact favourably debt market more than equities," said G. Chokkalingam, head of research at Equinomics said. "Market is more worried about how talks between Trump and Putin go, and that is why we did not see much of a rise today," he said. "Unless, there is clarity on tariffs levied on India, whether the existing tariffs will last long or can be bargained, or will it increase? ... all this is a worry for market, " he said. The research head said India can manage the shocks from the tariffs, and the government should now focus on supporting US-export oriented sectors such as textiles, auto component-makers etc.
Cutting back to stocks, companies pertaining to metals and oil and gas closed lower. Tata Steel and JSW Steel closed nearly 1-3% lower. Others such as Steel Authority Of India and NMDC closed over 3-4% lower. Reliance Industries closed nearly 1% lower, dragging down the Nifty Oil & Gas index. The sectoral index closed nearly 1% lower with most of its constituents closing lower except for GAIL (India).
Information technology stocks fared better. Wipro was the top gainer of the Nifty 50 index and closed over 2% higher. Others such as Infosys, Mphasis, and Coforge closed 1-2% higher. However, traders shed shares of large-cap IT companies such as Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and HCL Technologies.
