NEW DELHI – The bilateral trade between India and China has been moving positively, Commerce Secretary Sunil Brathwal said Thursday. "Trade developments have been good with China."
Amid volatility in the global trade landscape, the Indian government's stance towards China seems to have slightly changed, and it also intends to open the economy to China. Even while bilateral trade was steady, diplomatically, New Delhi adopted a reserved stance towards Beijing after the Galwan Valley conflict in 2020.
The government is also in dialogue with China over a smooth supply of critical minerals and rare earth magnets. Beijing's suspension of exports has caused a severe shortage of the minerals and has hindered production at automobile facilities around the world.
China is India's top import source with a share of 16% in India's total imports. India had imported goods worth $113.46 billion from China in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade deficit of $99. 20 billion. End
