NEW DELHI – India's merchandise trade deficit widened to an eight-month high of $27.35 billion in July as imports rose at a quicker pace than exports, according to commerce ministry data released Thursday. The trade deficit was $18.78 billion in June and $24.76 billion a year ago.
Merchandise exports were up 7.3% on year at $37.24 billion in July and imports rose 8.6% to a three-month high of $64.59 billion. In June, India had exported goods worth $35.14 billion and imported goods worth $53.92 billion.
This is the first time exports have risen on year in three months as traders likely rushed shipments to the US ahead of the August tariff deadline. The US has imposed a 25% tariff on imports from India from Aug. 7, which will rise to 50% from Aug. 27, although the two sides continue to negotiate a trade agreement.
Exports to the US rose 20% on year to $8.01 billion in July. In Apr-Jul, India exported goods worth $33.53 billion to the US, up 22% on year. India's trade surplus with the US widened in July as imports to the world's largest economy rose 12% on year to $17.41 billion.
India's goods exports were up 3.1% on year at $149.20 billion during the first four months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) and imports increased 5.4% to $244.01. The trade deficit during Apr-Jul was $94.81 billion, higher than $86.83 billion a year ago.
India's services exports last month grew just 1.4% on year to $31.03 billion, according to provisional data released by the commerce ministry. Services imports fell 3.4% on year to $15.40 billion in July. The services trade surplus widened to $15.63 billion in July from $14.66 billion a year ago. The Reserve Bank of India will further update services trade data by the end of August.
India's non-oil imports rose to $179.18 billion in Apr-Jul from $165.57 billion a year ago and oil imports moderated to $64.83 billion from $66.02 billion a year ago.
India imported electronic goods worth $36.60 billion in the four months to July, higher than $30.60 billion imported in the same period a year ago. Gold imports moderated slightly to $11.46 billion in Apr-Jul from $11.84 billion a year ago.
China remained India's biggest import source nation in Apr-Jul, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia. Imports from China increased to $40.66 billion in the first four months of FY26 from $35.96 billion a year ago. Imports from Russia fell in Apr-Jul to $21.62 billion from $24.03 billion a year ago, but imports from US rose to $17.41 billion from $15.50 billion a year ago.
India's non-oil exports increased to $127.46 billion in the four months to July from $118.34 billion in the same period a year ago, while petroleum product exports slowed to $21.75 billion from $26.43 billion a year ago. India exported engineering goods worth $39.33 billion in Apr-Jul compared with $37.10 billion a year ago. Electronic goods exports rose to $16.17 billion in Apr-Jul from $11.25 billion last year. Exports to China were $5.76 billion in Apr-Jul compared with $4.80 billion a year ago. End
