IMD sees extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Konkan, Goa on Sunday

MUMBAI – The India Meteorologycal Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Konkan and Goa on Sunday and in parts of central Maharashtra on Sunday and Monday. The department has issued an 'orange alert' in Amravati, Betul, Hoshangabad, and Harda districs of Maharashtra and Uttar Kannada and Udupi districts of coastal Karnataka. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

 

The weather bureau also sees heavy rainfall over parts of central Maharashtra on Thursday, in Marathawada till Friday and also on Monday, in Gujarat region during Sunday and Saurashtra and Kutch on Sunday. Other parts of west India are likely to receive moderate rainfall during the next five days. 

 

Owing to heavy rainfall, a moderate risk of flash flood is likely over a few watersheds and neighbourhood districts of coastal Karnataka, such as Dakshin Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts and adjoining Chikmagalur, Hassan, Kodagu and Shimoga district of south interior Karnataka. Similar flash flood risk is also likely in Kolhapur and Satara districts of central Maharashtra and in Konkan and Goa till Friday, the weather agency said. Surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, it said.

 

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of east and central India till Wednesday. Parts of west Madhya Pradesh is likely to see very heavy rain till Friday and similar weather condition is likely in Vidarbha till Sunday, in Chhattisgarh on Thursday and from Monday to Wednesday, and in Odisha on Thursday, the department said.

 

In south peninsular India, very heavy rainfall is likely till Tuesday, IMD said. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to see very heavy rainfall on Thursday, and Telangana is likely to see similar weather till Saturday, the weather agency said. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 kilometers per hour are very likely over south Peninsular India on Thursday, it said.  End
