Amara Raja Q1 net falls; expense growth exceeds revenue rise

MUMBAI – Amara Raja Energy and Mobility Ltd. reported a fall in its net profit for the June quarter as expenses rose more than the increase in revenue, primarily due to a 35% increase in purchase of stock in trade. The company missed analysts' estimates for both net profit and revenue.
The automotive battery manufacturer reported a net profit of INR 1.94 billion for the reporting quarter, down 21% on year but up 16% sequentially. Analysts had estimated the net profit at INR 2.36 billion. The company posted revenue from operations of INR 33.50 billion, up 7% on year and 13% sequentially. Analysts had estimated revenue at INR 33.79 billion.
Total expenses of the company rose almost 10% to INR 31.03 billion, from INR 28.28 billion a year ago. The cost of raw materials consumed was INR 16.94 billion, up 6% on year from INR 16.00 billion. The purchase of stock-in-trade increased 35% to INR 6.68 billion from INR 4.95 billion. Other expenses were INR 4.03 billion, up 12% on year but down 8% over the trailing quarter.
Depreciation and amortisation expenses were INR 1.29 billion, up 9% from INR 1.18 billion in the year-ago quarter. The company's finance costs stood at INR 103.5 million, up 15% from INR 89.7 million a year ago. Employee benefits expense was at INR 1.98 billion, up over 6% from INR 1.86 billion a year ago.
On the National Stock Exchange, shares of Amara Raja closed at INR 952.60, down 0.6% from Wednesday. End
