MUMBAI – Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over westcentral Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area was formed over northwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts in the early hours of Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The low pressure area is expected to increase the intensity of rainfall over east and central India, the weather department said.

The upper air cyclonic circulation, associated with the low pressure area, is likely to move west-northwestwards and become well-marked in the next 24 hours, according to the weather agency. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of east and central India till Tuesday, the department said. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar on Wednesday, the department said, for which it has issued a red alert. A red alert, which is the highest level of weather warning, indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours.

The upper cyclonic circulation is likely to move across north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha in the next 48 hours, the weather bureau said. This is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over multiple locations of south peninsular India till Tuesday.

The bureau has also issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh Wednesday and over Telangana till Thursday. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km per hour are expected over the southern peninsula in the next two days, it said.

Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Kutch and its neighbourhood while an east-west trough stretches from the central parts of the Bay of Bengal to the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Kutch, the weather department said. These weather systems are expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Marathwada Wednesday, and over Konkan, Goa, and the ghat areas of central Maharashtra from Saturday to Tuesday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over several parts of west India till Tuesday, it said.  End
