AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in Apr-Jul rose 5.22% on year to 293.05 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.

 

This rise was mainly led by the uptrend in crude and petroleum products cargo, which account for nearly one-third of total cargo handled at all the major ports across country. It rose 7.10% on year to 87.81 million tonnes for Apr-Jul.

 

Other than crude oil, container traffic saw 11.06% increase in tonnage terms at 69.52 million tonnes and raw fertilier up 21.75% on year to 3.52 million tonnes. The coking coal volumes rose 0.75% on year to 21.21 million tonnes, while miscellaneous traffic was up 8.46% on year at 36.57 million tonnes. The volume of finished fertilisers imported at these ports in the first four months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) was up 14.86% on year at 2.64 million tonnes.

 

The increase in cargo handled during Apr-Jul was under pressure due to lower cargo volume of the thermal coal cargo volume, which fell 2.01% on year to 44.09 million tonnes. The volume of iron ore pellets, too, was down 6.98% on year at 16.38 million tonnes. The volumes of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, fell 0.59% on year to 11.3 million tonnes.

 

Among the specific ports, Paradip port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Jul at 52.20 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port at 49.32 million tonnes and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 32.71 million tonnes.
