IMD issues red alert for extremely heavy rain in parts of Telangana Wed-Thu

MUMBAI - An upper air cyclonic circulation currently lies over north interior Karnataka, and an east-west trough runs from the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal to another cyclonic circulation over north interior Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department said. Under the influence of these weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Telangana on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather department said.

 

IMD has issued a red alert for this, which indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning. The same weather conditions are likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, over Rayalaseema on Wednesday, and over Telangana from Wednesday to Saturday, the department said.

 

Heavy rainfall is seen over most parts of the southern peninsula till Monday, it said. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km per hour are expected over the region in the next two days, it said.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation currently lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh and a western disturbance presenting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, the weather bureau said. Under the influence of these weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, the bureau said, for which it has issued a red alert.

 

The department has also issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir till Wednesday. In northwest India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen over several parts of the region in the next seven days, the bureau said. 

 

An upper air circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a trough running from Bihar to north Odisha is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over several parts of east and central India till Monday, the department said. The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Tuesday.  End
