India restricts imports of certain jute items from Bangladesh

NEW DELHI – The government has restricted the import of certain jute items from Bangladesh, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification Monday. The government has imposed port restrictions on the import of bleached and unbleached woven fabrics of jute or of other textile bast fibre, twine and rope, jute, and sacks and bags of jute.
Import of these items from Bangladesh is not allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border, the notification said. However, imports of these items are allowed through the Nhava Sheva seaport, also known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Navi Mumbai. The government had restricted imports of woven fabrics in June.
India imported goods worth $2.0 billion from Bangladesh in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). India imported jute and other textile bast fibres worth $80 million in FY25, data from the commerce ministry showed. End
