MUMBAI – A low pressure area is likely to form over northwest and the adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around Wednesday, and is likely to become more marked in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said. Under its influence, the intensity and spread of rainfall over east and central India are likely to increase, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over several parts of the region from Wednesday to Sunday, the weather department said.
The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Tuesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
An upper air cyclonic circulation currently lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh, while a western disturbance presenting as a cyclonic circulation lies north Pakistan and the adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. Under the influence of these weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Uttarakhand on Monday and Wednesday, the department said, for which it has issued a red alert. The same weather systems are likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over multiple parts of northwest India in the next seven days, the department said.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lying over northeast Assam is expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on Monday. Extremely heavy rainfall is seen over the same regions on Tuesday, the weather bureau said, for which it has issued a red alert. Heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of northeast India till Friday, the bureau said.
In south peninsular India, an upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana, the weather department said. The weather system is likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Telangana on Thursday and Friday, for which the bureau has issued a red alert. Very heavy rainfall is seen over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh from Wednesday to Friday, over Rayalaseema on Wednesday and Thursday, and over Telangana from Wednesday to Sunday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of the southern peninsula till Sunday, it said. End
