NEW DELHI - Around 55% of Indian exports to the US will be impacted by the 25% reciprocal tariff imposed by Washington on Indian goods, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Monday. The US has imposed the 25% duty on Indian goods with exemption to some sectors – pharma, energy, and electronics – from additional duty.
About 45% of India's exports to the US comprise goods from the exempted sector. "Combination of different factors such as product differentiation, demand, quality, contractual arrangements would determine the impact on India's exports," Chaudhary said in written response to a question in Lok Sabha.
India had exported $86.51 billion worth of goods to the US in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion. In the current year, nearly $50 billion of Indian goods imported by the US would be subject to higher tariff. The US is also likely to raise this tariff to 50% from Aug. 27.
India's commerce department has been holding consultations with all stakeholders to take feedback of their assessment of the situation, Chaudhary said. The government will take all necessary steps to secure its national interest, he added.
Exporters saw the proposed trade deal with the US as an insulation against the reciprocal tariffs, but New Delhi and Washington are yet to iron out their differences over US' demand to get access to India's politically and socially-sensitive farm and dairy sector. India has always maintained a protective stance on its farm and dairy sector, but the US wants to push genetically-modified crops and dairy products into India under the deal. New Delhi is unwilling to yield to these demands. End
