Cabinet OKs INR-42.5-bln special development package for Assam, Tripura

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the Scheme of Special Development Packages for Assam and Tripura with a total cost of INR 42.50 billion. Out of the total, INR 30 billion will be for development of infrastructure in Assam, as per the memoranda of settlement signed by the Centre and State government with the ULFA Groups of Assam, a government release said.
The government will give INR 5 billion each for development of infrastructure in adivasi inhabited and North Cacher Hills Autonomous Council areas of Assam, the release said. Tripura will be provided INR 2.50 billion for development of tribals, as per the memoranda of settlement signed by the Centre and the Tripura government with the National Liberation Front of Twipra and the All Tripura Tiger Force Groups.
The total outlay of the proposed package is INR 72.50 billion and the remaining INR 30 billion will be given by the Assam government. The scheme will improve the socio-economic condition of vulnerable and marginalised groups of people, the release said. It will "boost employment opportunities, provide health services, promote education and skilling and income through livelihood activities for youth and women," it said. End
