MUMBAI – With the June quarter earnings drawing to a close, telecom stocks are likely to consolidate in the near term as investors await fresh triggers. Sector bellweather Bharti Airtel reported its June quarter earnings this week. Vodafone Idea has still not announced its earnings date despite the earnings season petering out.
Bharti Airtel's shares are likely to move in a range of INR 1,800-INR 1,900 in the coming week, a technical analyst at a domestic brokerage said. The company's net profit for the June quarter fell 46% on quarter to INR 59.48 billion, coming in below analysts' estimate of INR 73.88 billion. Its top line rose 3% sequentially to INR 494.63 billion. The stock fell 1.3% this week.
"Bharti's industry-leading ARPU (average revenue per user), steady subscriber additions, and robust FCF (free cash flow) generation continue to bolster its balance sheet, supporting enhanced shareholder returns...we continue to see Bharti as the best way to play the Indian telecom sector," Nuvama Institutional Equities said on the earnings. The stock ended 3.3% lower at INR 1,856.60 Friday after large deals were executed at a discount, with media reports saying a promoter group entity was the likely seller.
Vodafone Idea is likely to move in a range of INR 7-INR 8 next week, analysts said. On Friday, the stock closed 3.1% lower at INR 6.51. The beleagured telecom major's losses are likely to contract slightly sequentially to INR 69.59 billion in the June quarter from INR 71.66 billion.
