MUMBAI – Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the Western Himalayan region in the next seven days under the influence of the monsoon trough, the India Meteorological Department said. Currently, the eastern end of the monsoon trough is positioned near the foothills of the Himalayas, the weather department said.

A western disturbance presenting as a cyclonic circulation currently lies over north Punjab while a trough runs from northeast Uttar Pradesh to south Bangladesh, the weather department said. Under the influence of these weather conditions, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of northwest India except Rajasthan till Thursday, the department said.

Under the influence of the same weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over east Uttar Pradesh on Friday, the weather department said, for which it has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar in the next seven days, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over most parts of east India till Thursday. In the adjoining central India, only light to moderate rainfall is expected in the next four-five days, it said.

In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh till Sunday and over Assam and Meghalaya in the next three days. Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over most of the region till Thursday, the department said.

In west India, heavy rainfall is seen over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada on Friday, over Konkan and Goa on from Tuesday to Wednesday, as per the weather agency. Light to moderate rainfall is expected over most of the region in the next five to six days.  End
