MUMBAI – The global FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 103.5 points in July, down around 2% on month and down over 22% on year, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The index declined due to a fall in Indica prices by 2.2% from its June level, it said.
Glutinous and Aromatic rice prices also fell by 2.2% and 0.7%, respectively, due to weak demand. Prices of Japonica rice moved little as import tenders in Eastern Asia provided some underpinning, the organisation said. "Sentiment was generally weak in Asian markets of Indica rice during July, as fresh demand remained lackluster against a backdrop of ample export availabilities," it added.
India Pusa Basmati variety remained unchanged at $875.0 in July from the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India fell to $356.9 per tonne in July from $365.1 per tonne in June and that of the 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $371.2 per tonne from $379.0 per tonne, the report said. "Movements of whole-grain prices tended to be more mixed in India, where Kharif crop plantings progressed at an upbeat pace," the organisation said.
A slowdown in demand weighed on prices of Indian white rice, however, prices of Indian parboiled rice rose due to previously sealed deals with African buyers and expectations of additional sales to Bangladesh. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India rose to $380.2 per tonne in July from $376.3 per tonne in June.
The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety fell to $350.8 per tonne in July from $368.5 per tonne in June while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety fell to $384.0 per tonne in July from $407.5 per tonne in June. The fall in prices was especially steep in Thailand, where a dearth of new orders intensified efforts to narrow price differentials with competing origins.
Rice prices also eased in Vietnam and Pakistan. The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice was $354.7 per tonne in July, lower than $360.0 per tonne in June. Pakistan's 5% broken rice declined to $388.8 in July from $391.6 per tonne in June while price of the basmati rice was at $1,066.0 per tonne in July, down from $1,067.3 in June. The decline in rice prices in Vietnam was limited by sales to Filipino and African buyers while seasonal tightness limited the fall in prices in Pakistan. End
