MUMBAI – The first-year premium income of life insurance companies in India rose 22.4% on year to INR 389.58 billion in July, data released by the Life Insurance Council on Friday showed. The rise in premium income was broad-based, with both the private sector and Life Insurance Corp. of India seeing over 20% increase from a year ago. 

 

Premium income during the first four months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) was INR 1.33 trillion, up 9.0% on year. Premium income had declined 3% on year in June to INR 411.17 billion.

 

LIC's first-year premiums rose 22.7% on year to INR 226.18 billion in July and private life insurers' premiums were up 22.0% at INR 162.40 billion. LIC's market share fell shaprly in July from a month ago but was higher compared to July 2024. LIC's market share was 58.1% in July, against 66.6% in June and 57.9% in July 2024. 

 

SBI Life Insurance Co.'s premium income rose 26.9% on year to INR 38.03 billion and HDFC Life Insurance Co. Ltd.'s income was up 13.2% at INR 30.54 billion. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd. registered a rise of 8.3% in premium income at INR 19.06 billion in July.
