-- Crisil arm: Cost of vegetarian thali down 14% on year at INR 28.1 in Jul
-- Crisil arm: Cost of non-vegetarian thali down 13% on yr at INR 53.5 in Jul
MUMBAI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali fell 14% on year in July to INR 28.1 due to a sharp drop in the prices of vegetables--primarily tomato, onion and potato--Crisil Intelligence said in a report. The cost of a non-vegetarian thali fell 13% on year to INR 53.5, due to lower vegetable prices and an estimated 12% on-year drop in broiler prices, which make up about 50% of the cost of the thali, it said.
Tomato prices fell 36% to INR 42 per kg in July from INR 66 per kg a year ago. Tomato prices typically surge around July and August due to seasonality. They had even breached INR 100 per kg in 2023. Prices of potato and onion declined 30% and 36% on year, respectively, according to the release.
Prices of other elements of a vegetarian thali, such as pulses, declined 14% on year, driven by higher production and stock levels compared with the year-ago period. The cost of rice declined 4% on year, according to the release.
However, despite a reduction in basic customs duty on crude edible oils, vegetable oil prices surged 20% on year as the benefits of lower duty were not passed on fully to customers. Additionally, a 6% on-year increase in liquefied petroleum gas cylinder prices limited the decline in overall cost of thalis, as per the release.
On a monthly basis, the price of a vegetarian thali rose 4% in July as tomato prices surged 31% on month because of falling arrivals. Potato and onion prices edged up 2% and 5% on month, respectively, Crisil Intelligence said. On the other hand, the cost of a non-vegetarian thali declined on month owing to a 9% drop in broiler prices. Broiler prices declined amid lower demand during the monsoon and the onset of the month of Shravan when a section of the population typically avoids consuming meat, it said.
"In the near term, thali prices are expected to remain lower on year owing to a high base of tomato prices," Pushan Sharma, director at Crisil Intelligence, said. "Anticipated higher production of pulses is also likely to soften prices. However, the extent of the decline may be limited as potato and onion prices are expected to remain firm going forward."
The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man's expenditure. The data also reveal the ingredients such as cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil, and cooking gas that are driving the change in the cost of a thali. End
