MUMBAI – India's headline indices closed higher Thusrday after falling to their lowest level since May 9, as investors bought equities at low levels. Covering of short positions due to the expiry of weekly contracts of Nifty 50 derivatives also aided the recovery, analysts said. Benchmark indices had fallen as much as 1% earlier in the session as investors reacted to the additional 25% tariffs announced by the US on Indian goods.

The Nifty 50 closed at 24596.15 points, up 21.95 points or 0.1% and the BSE Sensex ended at 80623.26 points, up 79.27 points or 0.1%. Retail investors slightly "overreacted" after US President Donald Trump imposed additional 25% tariffs on Indian imports, taking the total tariff on Indian goods to 50%, the head of research of a domestic brokerage said.

Most small-cap and mid-cap stocks recovered in the last half an hour of trade, along with pharmaceuticals and IT stocks. Barring Nifty Smallcap 250, all broader market indices closed in the green, up 0.2-0.6%. The Nifty Smallcap 250 ended 0.1% lower. Despite rising during the day, India VIX, the fear indicator of the market, closed over 2% lower at 11.6875.

Nifty Media and Nifty IT led the pack, closing 1% higher each. Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare, which fell in the previous two sessions, rose 0.6-0.8% despite Trump threatening a tariff of 250% on pharmaceutical products.

Despite managing to close higher, nearly 51% of the stocks traded on the NSE closed lower, while 47% of the stocks closed higher. Index heavyweight HDFC Bank helped push the Nifty 50 higher and contributed nearly 0.1% to the rise of the Nifty 50. Earlier during the session, the Nifty 50 had fallen below the psychological support of 24500 points and the Sensex breached the 80000-point level.

Hero MotoCorp was the top gainer in the Nifty 50 and closed over 4% higher. The stock rose after the company reported a higher-than-estimated net profit for the June quarter. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and Adani Enterprises were the worst hit in the Nifty 50, falling around 2% each.

Lupin ended 5% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 200. Prabhudas Lilladher expects the pharma company's margins to sustain, given its strong pipeline in the US and retained its estimates for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) and FY27. Analysts also believe that imposition of huge 250% tariffs on pharma products is unlikely to impact Indian pharma companies as India can shift the market from the US, analysts said.

Most textile stocks remained under pressure and closed 0.6-5.2% lower, after US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariffs on India, effective Aug. 27, over its continued purchase of crude oil from Russia. Trent was among the laggards, with analysts expressing concerns about the company's June quarter earnings due to its slow like-for-like growth during the quarter.

Bharat Heavy Electricals fell 5% to a near three-month low after the company's net loss widened on year. Analysts had expected the company to report a net profit in the reporting quarter. Bharat Forge was among the worst hit in the Nifty 200 earlier in the session, but closed 2% higher. Nuvama expects the subsidiaries of the company to remain loss-making and sees a muted growth in the company's core business, according to ET Now.

Godfrey Phillips India fell nearly 8% and was the worst hit in the Nifty 500. The stock fell after rising for three sessions. The stock had risen for three sessions on the back of robust earnings for the June quarter.
