MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, under the influence of an upper cyclonic circulation in the area. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over most parts of northeast India for the next seven days, the weather department said. The agricultural meteorology division of the weather department has advised farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to postpone all fresh sowing and transplantation operations of kharif crops until the heavy rainfall abates.
Currently, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the central parts of Bangladesh and has formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha, the weather department said. Under the influence of these weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of eastern India in the next seven days. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of central India until Wednesday, the department said.
A cyclonic circulation over north Punjab and its neighbourhood is likely to bring a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall over several parts of northwest India from Saturday, the weather department said. Light or moderate rainfall is expected over the Western Himalayan region and over parts of the northwestern plains in the next seven days, it said.
In western India, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Marathwada till Friday, over Konkan and Goa on Friday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and over central Maharashtra on Thursday, the weather department said. Light to moderate rainfall is expected over most of the region in the next five to six days. End
