MUMBAI – The number of e-way bills generated in July rose 25.8% on year to a record high of 131.91 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. This suggests GST collections could rise in August. Sequentially, the number of e-way bills generated rose 10.4% from 119.46 million in June.
At 25.8%, the on-year growth in generation of e-way bills in July was the highest since October 2023. E-way bills had risen 19.3% in June. An e-way bill is a GST document for transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
Increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions are reflected in the next month's collections. GST collections rose 7.5% on year to INR 1.96 trillion in July, data released earlier this month showed. End
