NEW DELHI - India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers and others involved in the agri sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday. Modi's comment comes at a time when the US has announced 50% tariff on Indian goods with New Delhi and Washington yet to iron out differences over farm sector in bilateral trade deal negotiations.

Indian exporters saw the trade deal as a cushion against the US' extra tariffs, but the deal is still away from conclusion. The US wants access to India's farm sector under the trade deal. India, on the other hand, has always maintained a protective stance on the sector. The US also wants to push its genetically-modified crops and dairy products into India under the deal. But India is not willing to yield to these demands, as this may compromise on the interests of Indian farmers and animal keepers.

"I know I might have to pay a huge personal price for this (protecting interests of domestic farm sector), but I am ready for it," Modi said at an event in New Delhi. India will always prioritise and protect the interests of its farmers, animal keepers, and fishermen, Modi said.

The US has imposed 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods effective Thursday. White House has also announced levy of another 25% duty on Indian goods from Aug. 27, citing India's crude oil imports from Russia as the reason.

The Indian government has called US' tariffs "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable". India has reiterated that its oil imports from Russia have been based on market factors, done only for the the objective of ensuring energy security of the country. "It is therefore, extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the external affairs ministry said.   End
