NEW DELHI – New Delhi and Moscow, at the 11th session of India-Russia Working Group on Modernisation & Industrial Cooperation held in New Delhi on Wednesday, reaffirmed their strategic partnership and signed a protocol to enhance engagement in various sectors like aluminium, fertilisers, and railway transport. India held the session at a time when US President Donald Trump has threatened New Delhi to raise tariffs on goods imported from India into the US for India's strong ties with Russia.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia and Russia's Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Alexey Gruzdev chaired the session on behalf of their respective nations. "Key focus areas (discussed at the session) included cooperation in aerospace science and technology, including the establishment of a modernised wind tunnel facility, production of small aircraft piston engines, and joint development in carbon fibre technology, additive manufacturing, and 3D printing," the commerce ministry said in a release.
"Both sides also explored opportunities in rare earth and critical minerals extraction, underground coal gasification, and creation of modern industrial infrastructure," the release said. "The two sides welcomed enhanced engagement in aluminium, fertilisers, and railway transport, alongside capacity building and technology transfer in mining sector equipment, exploration, and industrial and domestic waste management."
Around 80 delegates participated in the session, representing both sides, including senior government officials, domain experts, and representatives from industry, according to the release. New Delhi's strong trade ties with Moscow have helped India procure crude oil at a discounted rate from Russia in the aftermath of Russia-Ukraine war.
Russia has been the top source of crude oil imports for India since 2022-23 (Apr-Mar). India's $63.84 billion goods import from Russia in FY25 include $56.87 billion worth of crude oil. End
