Water level in key reservoirs up 14% on wk, 50% YoY at 126.482 bcm as of Thu

MUMBAI – The water level in 161 key reservoirs across India rose more than 14% on week to 126.482 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, according to data from the Central Water Commission. Water levels in the week ended Jul. 24 was 110.864 billion cubic metres. The current water level is up 49.52% from last year.

 

The current level is 69.31% of the total live storage capacity of 182.496 billion cubic metres. According to data collated by Informist, the current water level in key reservoirs is at a six-year-high. The water level as of Thursday was 50.16% above the 10-year average for this period.

 

Of the 161 reservoirs, seven were at full capacity, up from six reservoirs a week ago, the data from the Central Water Commission showed. The number of reservoirs with water levels of 40% or less fell to 24 from 33 a week ago.

 

Above-normal rainfall helped to replenish water levels in all five regions across the country. India received an average rainfall of 78.8 millimetres in the week ended Jul. 30, 19% above the normal of 66.3 millimetres for the week, according to the India Meteorological Department. In south Peninsula, rainfall was 4% above average at 49.9 millimetres during the week, data from the bureau showed. Rainfall was 52% above the long-period average in central India at 117.1 millimetres. Rainfall was 2% below the long-period average in east and northeast India at 88.3 millimetres. In northwest India, rainfall was 5% below the average at 50.5 millimetres.

 

The water level in reservoirs in the northern region as of Thursday increased to 12.241 billion cubic metres, or 61.66% of the total live storage capacity, up from 31.17% a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

Reservoirs in the eastern region held 11.297 billion cubic metres of water as of Thursday, or 51.92% of their total live storage capacity. This was higher than 34.52% held by the reservoirs in the same period a year ago. The eastern region comprises Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal.

 

In the western region, which comprises Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, the water level in reservoirs was 27.264 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 72.98% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 48.30% a year ago.

 

Reservoirs in the central region held 34.277 billion cubic metres or 70.55% of the total live storage capacity of 28 reservoirs in the region, up from 36.49% a year ago. The region comprises Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh.

 

The water level in the southern region was 41.404 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 75.36% of the total live storage capacity of the 45 reservoirs in the region. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 63.92% of the total live storage capacity.  End
